What types of communication were there?
There were many types of writing used in Ancient Egypt but the two main ones used
Hieroglyphics and Hieratic. Hieroglyphics were simple pictures that represented different words. They are used more for formal writing rather than daily life as they took a while to write. Stories tell of Thoth, the God of writing and wisdom brought down the writing to earth for humans to use. Hieratic was faster to write and less complicated then hieroglyphics. It was a cursive style of writing and was developed after hieroglyphics to be simpler and easier to write. It was used more in daily life and was more common then hieroglyphics but had a similar structure to them and was read from right to left.

The Ancient Egyptians wrote on Papyrus which was a paper-like material made out of pressed reeds. They also wrote on old bits of pottery and limestone. They used reed brushes dipped in ink to write and the ink was made of crushed, coloured minerals mixed with water
Who was able to read and write?
Most people in ancient Egypt couldn't read and write except for the scribes. Scribes had to go to a special school to learn to read and write. It was very difficult to learn the languages because their were many different symbols and they took many years to learn. They had to learn both Hieratic and Hieroglyphics fluently.

They used their writing for many different purposes such as communication in battles,
and to count and record the number of crops and animals. They also used writing to decorate tombs with spells. They were carved into the walls then painted to colour them. They also decorated the walls of the temples with words that respected the gods and goddesses in a similar way. One of the most common uses was to write letters between ordinary people and between leaders. The leaders also used writing to document laws.

They used Hieroglyphics to decorate tombs and temples with spells and words about their Gods and Goddesses. They also wrote down all of their religious texts to preserve their culture and beliefs for their next generations
What value did the culture place on written communication?
Written communication was very important to the Ancient Egyptians. They used it on a daily basis for a variety of common things like writing letters and recording amount of animals and crops. They also used it for other very important things, some that could even mean life or death when it was used to communicate in battle.
